Rico Slade will fucking kill you – huh?

April 18, 2011

It was a slow day yesterday. We were fucking around on amazon, typing in tags like ‘Hollywood’ and ‘Tom Cruise’ to see how fast we could get to Stavrogin’s Hollywood book, when…we found this:

Rico Slade will fucking kill you by Bradley Sands.

It’s not that hard to find, and you’ll know when you see it because there’s a picture of Arnie on the front with his hair on fire and a tagline at the top saying ‘infinite death.’

Is it any good?

Not sure. We read the first chapter and it was decent. Bizarro too, kinda like the stuff Jeff Noon writes. And the concept is brilliant. The action hero when he’s not filming anything, what’s he gonna get up to? He’s gonna kill everyone he sees because he’s a killing machine. Really, this Sands guy has taken that Arnie psychology and played it out in all those parts where there isn’t a crisis. Although the first chapter is Slade on a plane stopping a guy with a swordfish trying to get to Tokyo Disney…actually, that kinda works against my point…but it doesn’t matter, it’s still a great concept.

So where did this book come from?

We googled Bradley Sands and it turns out he’s writing for Lazy Fascist Press. We digged a little more and found him on the Chuck Palahniuk site promoting his book.

Right here

This guy has class. Check it out…directing people to negative reviews of his book, no bullshit self-praise…we don’t wanna go too far here, but you’ve gotta give credit.

Anything else?

Yeah, and this is kinda weird. Digging further on the Lazy Fascist site, there’s a writer called Sam Pink who’s written a book called Person. It sounds decent, and a lot of people like it…and when we saw this description: ‘Pink uses single sentences instead of chunky paragraphs’, we thought, shit, just like Stavrogin’s book. And reading an extract of it, it was true. Single sentences [and really decent writing too]. We looked it up on amazon and checked the publishing date…and this is the weird part…it was published on the same day as Stavrogin’s book, Charcoal. October 1st 2010 [Note: This was when Stavrogin was published under another press and before he self-destructed and fucked it all up]. It’s like those two volcano movies coming out at the same time, only both of these books are good.

Do Pink and Stavrogin have the same brain?

We asked Stavrogin and he said, ‘no.’ He also said Pink’s book was probably much better than his and less miserable…but still, the synchronicity of it all…it’s good to know that someone’s getting praise for this kind of writing.

In summary: If you’re bored, search amazon tags and you might find decent writing. Also, buy Rico Slade will fucking kill you and Person and support small press writing because most of the time it’s a lot better than the shit from above.

I’d buy it for the title alone. Genius.

Is he allowed to use Arnie on the cover? I always thought they were really anal about image protection and all that jazz.

    Great title though.

Not sure. But as it’s already there, he doesn’t seem to care much…

I followed the link to the Palahniuk site and you’re bang on, he does have class. Aren’t authors supposed to be precious about their work? You wouldn’t think so from this, and no single part of me can imagine someone like Easton Ellis being this humble about his shit…even though his shit is very good.

Yeah, and checked out ‘Person’ too. Good synopsis, good cover, sounds like the twin of ‘Charcoal’ only with more humour perhaps? Don’t get me wrong, I loved ‘Charcoal’, but it was miserable haha…even Stavrogin says so.

It looks like it’s the waxwork of Arnie so maybe it’s okay to use?

I’m not sure that makes sense…it’s still his image even if it is a waxwork, right?
