Good places to put zines in London [No.1] – The Alibi
Name of place: The Alibi
Is there a signed photo of Peter Falk above the bar? Yes
The first on the list was always gonna be The Alibi.
Usually, we don’t really go to the places we put zines in our free time. Actually, I don’t really go anywhere anymore [except TESCO]. The others might, but I don’t.
The Alibi is the exception.
I’ve been to about four of their movie nights.
Fast Times at Ridgemount High
Okay, I’ve been to three.
Oh yeah, they have a movie night. I guess most places do, but this one isn’t too crowded or…actually, this isn’t really something that’s distinguishing enough so we’ll move on.
The staff is decent.
One guy who stands behind the bar [I think he works there], told me where to put the rest of our zines. He wrote down some places to go on a piece of paper. It seems like a small thing, but a lot of staff in other places wouldn’t bother. They’d just say ‘no, I don’t know anywhere.’
Actually, that’s not really true. Most staff we’ve met in London has been friendly. There’s only been one real motherfucker and that was at the Book Club last year. Not a bad percentage for a big city. And The Book Club guy wasn’t there this year, so maybe he’s reformed? Or been kicked out?
Maybe he’s living in the woods with that South Korean film director, the two of them telling each other how sorry they are about things?
The Alibi is just a decent place with decent staff. Go there, watch a film, talk to someone. It’s decent.
Hang on, there is one thing. They make their own zine. It’s called FUN. That’s something to be proud of…creating your own thing, no matter if it’s good or bad.
How to get there?
Go to Dalston Junction station, walk past the smokers, turn left, walk towards the main road and then turn right. Walk up the road, past another station, past the Jamaican guy selling his CD, and watch the left side of the street very closely. It’s only a four minute walk from the station so if you look up and find yourself in Stoke Newington you’ve fucked up and gone too far.
